Former capital of French East Africa (AOF), Dakar is the capital of the Republic of Senegal, independent of France since 1960. It allows you to find all the clothes you want, especially in the Sandaga market, but in a sluggish vacarma and an incessant flow of stuffed cars.

At the end, the Independence Square, not far from the port of Dakar, next to which you will find everything you need: coffee, breweries, fast-food, pharmacies, craft shops, jewellers, post office, etc. Attention, however, the area is very tourist and the scams are legion. A walk to Cap Manuel is worth a visit, to walk peacefully by taking advantage of the cornice (do not stop there at night!).

Medina

The Medina is the popular district of an authentic Dakar. Founded by Governor William Ponty in 1914, this neighborhood is one of the most populous in the city and has a living standard over time. We find the Grande Mosque, the Soumbédioune market – a very tourist market -, souvenir shops. It is an ideal area to stay in Dakar if you want to stay in a relatively central position and stay away from the tumult of the city centre.

Grand Yoff

The Grand Yoff is plebisciated by Western tourists because it is popular, picturesque and dynamic. Located between the airport and the Hann Zoological Park, entertainment and local life are lively, with markets, restaurants, bars and nightclubs where to party. It is also an ideal starting point for those who want to travel to Casamance, the famous southern region of Senegal.

Island of Gorée

Why miss this historic island off the southern tip of Dakar? The island of Gorée is a commemoration in itself of the slave trade: colonized in 1444 for the first time by the Portuguese, it was taken by the Dutch in 1588, then by the French in 1677. Occupied by the English from 1804 to 1817, she returned to France until Independence. There are therefore many colonial buildings, including the Old Palace of the Governor. You can also visit the Musée de la Femme, the Maison des Esclaves, the Musée des Esclaves at the former Fort d’Estrées.
