Fourvière, antique Lyon

Juched on a hill, this is where the Romans first settled in 43 BC. Today, many remains are still visible – the ancient theatre, the ancient odeon, the Shrine of Cybèle – and the district offers breathtaking views of the city. Fourvière is a hupped, bourgeois, with a strong Catholic tradition. The rents can therefore be expensive but the tranquility that is offered by walking through the paths of the Parc des Heights to climb to the top of the hill, from the Vieux-Lyon, and the visit of the religious monuments (including the Basilica Notre-Dame-de-Fourvière, the Chapel Saint-Thomas, the church of Saint-Just) make it one of the best areas: frequented on the evening.

Saint John, Old London

It is the largest Renaissance neighbourhood in the world outside Italy, after Venice. Indeed, it is also the most touristic area in Lyon, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located west of the peninsula on the Saône docks, you will find many small restaurants to savour charcuterie, meats, salads and caps in Lyon – the gastronomy in Lyon, a great love story! -, nice bars, historical monuments – the Saint-Jean Cathedral -, the famous traboules enchevrées in a maze of small, colourful courtyards, and An excellent place to sleep, but rents are among the highest in the city.

La Presqu’Île

A strip of land between the Saône and the Rhone, the peninsula contains Lyon’s cultural identity, its brand image in a way. The area houses the 1st and 2nd arrondissements, and runs from the slopes of the Croix-Rousse to the Ainay district – the Aristocrate and bourgeois Lyon – and the Perrache train station. La Place Bellecour, la Place des Jacobins, l’Opéra, la Place des Terreaux, la Place des Cordeliers, l’Hôtel de Ville de Lyon, la Place des Célestins, la rue de la République, la rue Victor Hugo, l’Eglise Saint-Nizier, and the many shops, bars and restaurants are all the attractions of the peninsula. But be careful: it’s a rather tiled area, where to stay will be expensive.

Guillotière

Here is a neighborhood where to sleep in Lyon very cosmopolitan, central, groubling world, student, bobo and popular at once. Guillotière – or the "Guille", say the Lyons – on the docks of the Rhone, welcomes two major university campuses in Lyon, the docks where you stroll through the beautiful days, art galleries, concert bars, péniches and their bars filled with noctambules, African and Asian groceries not expensive. Many communities – Arabs, Africans, Asians and Roma – are there, in an atmosphere of “happy whip.” It is a popular neighborhood, where to stay will be cheaper than elsewhere in the center.

Terreaux and Croix-Rousse

The slopes of the Croix-Rousse – “the slopes” – are at the same time a small village in the metropolis, the lively and picturesque Lyon, the district of the holiday and the alternative bars, the venues of the arts and concerts, the social resistance – the revolt of the Canuts left by 1831 and the neighbourhood preserved its militant and contestant side – and urban walks to no longer finish. The atmosphere is rather bobo, from the one who loves the “bio”, and very alive from day to night. It’s one of the best areas to stay in Lyon if you’re young and like to party.
