Traveling to Guatemala , you will necessarily arrive at Guatemala City Airport, which is the capital of the country (its code is GUA). However, if you want to discover the country while avoiding too large distances, you should know that Guatemala also has two major national airports, which allow you to visit very interesting tourist sites. The first is that of Flores, which is about one hour from the Mayan ruins of Tikal , and the other is Puerto Barrios, on the Caribbean coast. It is a few kilometers from Livingston, an unmistakable passage during your trip to Guatemala! To find internal flights to Guatemala, you are advised to use the flight comparison Ulysses .

The car

It is not recommended to rent a car in Guatemala: indeed, driving is somewhat random, and the main roads are usually in the mountains. If you’re not 100% comfortable with boring roads and especially with fast driving, it’s better to forget! Especially since the shuttles for tourists are well developed throughout the country.

The shuttles

So we're here! Shuttles or shuttles are the most convenient and cheapest way to travel to Guatemala. Indeed, there are departures from all cities several times a day, on board minivans of about 10 places. Prices are affordable: include $20 for a trip from the airport to Lake Atitlan (4 driving hours), or $50 from the airport in Flores (9 driving hours).

There are also night buses for more comfort. The only drawback is the duration! Indeed, even if it doesn’t look, Guatemala is an extended country and roads are not always in excellent condition. For example, there are 10 hours of roads to reach the Semuc Champey Park from Antigua.

The public bus

Also known as chicken bus by locals as it serves mainly farmers to reach cities and sell their crops, the public bus is a local phenomenon! This is a very colourful and ceded American school bus in Guatemala. If you are not necessarily advised to travel by this means throughout your journey, because the drivers are more like heaters, boarding a bus for a short ride is really to do at least once during your stay.

Prices defy any competition (down $4 for the airport’s trip to Lake Atitlan), on the other hand, we’ll iron for comfort. These public buses are crowded at any time of day and night, and security can sometimes leave to be desired.

It is up to you to choose the means of transport that best suits your budget and the duration of your trip to Guatemala. In any case, know that you will find a lot of agencies to book your trips (especially at Lake Atitlan, at Antigua and Flores are tourist cities). You can even book your tickets online at certain sites!
