In autumn, deciduous trees prepare to sleep for winter and make reserves that will be used to produce buds during the spring sap rise. They get rid of them thin and flexible leaves which might freeze what would make them non-functional. The tree recovers the useful substances found in the leaves, stores and/or recycles to reuse them in early spring. The leaves, losing chlorophyll , substance responsible for their green color, take the color of other pigments. They then color in yellow or orange (presence of carotenoids), or even red (presence of anthocyanes).
