An abandoned city becomes the giant canvas of street artists
Very recently, we talked to you about Christiania district in Copenhagen, an atypical neighborhood with independent city...
♪ Belgium , there is a curious abandoned village that has some resemblance to its Danish neighbour, not that this city was proclaimed “free city” but because of Doel like Christiania, street art is an integral part of the city.
One would believe a ghost town at the first glance, but it is nothing, the small Flemish village of Doel unfortunately had to be abandoned by its inhabitants because of the growing expansion of the Port of Antwerp. Since then, it has been the street artists who populated the city and above all occupied much of the walls of all these houses left to abandon. Full walls covered with robots, giant rats, extraterrestrials and many other curiosities...
A famous urban exploration and urban art photographer named Jeremy Gibbs looked at the work of all these young artists... His photographs show us how much an abandoned city can relive thanks to works of street art. This curious Belgian village with ghost city looks has become thanks to its giant frescoes an open-air museum! We wish him the same future as the famous neighbourhood Five Pointz from New York without this tragic end!
Street art has this power to give poetry, magic to places that often lack soul. With ever more surprising works, street art artists often tell stories that speak to us all!
