Rent a vehicle or go to the Netherlands by car? Still the question of parking in the capital! Here are the basics to know and our tips to park in Amsterdam.
The capital of the Netherlands and the most populous city of the country, Amsterdam is one of the largest European capitals housing more than 850,000 Amstellodamois, in an urban community of 2.4 million people. In addition, Amsterdam is often ranked among the cities where it makes the most good living and for cause: it is a city – whose center is classified as the UNESCO World Heritage – green, surrounded by multiple channels. But the problem is to get there by car: where to find cheap parking in Amsterdam when most trips are done by public transport or by bicycle?
The city centre is wrapped around a network of concentric channels taking the form of a giant spider’s canvas and many sites of interest scatter urban territory: Amsterdam is indeed the first Dutch tourist and cultural destination. Here’s how to park in Amsterdam (parks, rates and reservations) if you prefer the car on the plane to discover the Netherlands.
Parking in Amsterdam : P+R
The city of Amsterdam was not designed to travel by car. We know the Dutch (or Dutch) cliché moving by bike along the canals: to park in Amsterdam, it is therefore advisable to target the periphery, then explore the city center by bike, tram, bus or metro. Parking facilities in Amsterdam are mostly located around the A10 and A2. Open 24 hours a day, they name themselves "P + R" (acronyme de » Parkeren en Reizen, "relay park"). The P+R offers very low rates – 1 € for 24 hours – for a total duration of 96 hours (sometimes 24 hours, check out according to the parking lot in Amsterdam). We have seven parking spaces in Amsterdam (P+R) in total, south, west and east of the city:
- P+R Sloterdijk : 1,40 € per hour, up to 4 days,
- P+R Bos en Lommer, 0.50 € for 10 minutes (3 € per hour) up to 4 days,
- P+R Olympish Stadion, 0.50 € for 9 minutes, up to 4 consecutive days,
- P+R VUmc (weekends), 1 € for 18 minutes, from Friday 18 hours to Monday 4 hours,
- P+R Rai, 24 hours maximum, then 17,50 € per day,
- P+R ArenA, 1 € for 25 minutes, up to 4 days,
- P+R Zeeburg I in II, 2,40 € per hour, up to 4 days.
Find a parking in Amsterdam
The P+R Olympish Stadion – located in the south-west – is the most frequented: it is therefore recommended to deport to another P+R in the event of high affluence (especially sporting or cultural events). One infographic (only in Dutch) allows to visualize in real time the number of places available in one of the car parks. It is also recommended to download in advance the parking map in Amsterdam.
Parking in Amsterdam: parking in the city centre
If, however, you want to park in the city centre, know that there are some parking spaces, although it will be – you will be warned – you can’t be more complicated. The site Byclick references all parking and parking in Amsterdam. It will take between €20 and €35 a day, and above all, book in advance to be sure to leave his car serenely. Finally, it is also possible to go in search of a place to park in Amsterdam: in the street. If you find one, such as an archaeologist excavating an incredible relic of Antiquity, don’t forget to pay at the parkmeter by teaching your registration plate in the machine.

Parking in Amsterdam: free parking
For the lucky ones, there are of course free parking lots, but they are very likely to be assaulted by tourists and residents. You will find them in Spinnerij, Diemen-Zuid, Gaasperplas, or Buikslotermeerplein. These are free of course, but not monitored: be careful not to leave objects of value inside the passenger compartment!
